COBOL Structure and Divisions

Before start with programming let’s start with the structure of the COBOL program. How the COBOL program should be written.

All COBOL program consists of the following hierarchical structure.

Division is a block of code usually contains one or more sections. It starts where the division name is encountered and it ends with the beginning of the next division or with the end of the program.

COBOL program is structured to have four divisions at a high level.

  • Identification Division

It contains program information

  • Environment Division

It contains environment information

  • Data Division

Contains data field descriptions

  • Procedure Division

Contains actual logic of the program
